Product Variant Selector
Choose the right variant without leaving the line
Choosing a product that comes in many versions usually means scanning a long list of near-identical names. Product Variant Selector changes every product field in the backend so that it searches products, not loose variants. Pick one that has variants and its own options chooser opens to settle the exact variant; pick one without variants and it is chosen directly. Type the exact code or barcode of a variant and it is selected at once.

From the line to the exact product
Search products, not variants
Type a name in any product field. The list shows products, so you no longer scroll through every variant.
Choose the exact options
When the product comes in several variants, a dialog opens to choose each option, such as legs or color. Combinations that do not exist are shown but cannot be selected. A product without variants is chosen directly.
Type a code and you are done
Type the exact internal reference or barcode of a variant and pick the result: that variant is selected directly, without opening the dialog.
Change the variant with the pencil
A pencil button next to the field reopens the options dialog for the chosen variant. It appears only when the product has variants. On order and invoice lines it comes with the companion module Variant Selector Account, installed automatically when Accounting is present.
See the product at a glance
A small picture of the chosen variant appears next to the field, so you can tell similar products apart without opening them. It is shown by default on bill of materials lines, the product and components of a manufacturing order, and purchase order lines, and a field can turn it on or off in its view. When the Image Viewer module is installed, a click on the picture enlarges it.
A variant the field does not allow
If the field does not accept the chosen variant, you see the notice "This variant is not allowed in this field." and the field stays as it was.
Considerations
- The chooser covers the options that create variants. Free-text values, price and quantity are not part of it.
- The pencil appears only for products that have variants.
- It does not change prices or add rules: it only decides which exact product a field uses.
- The dropdown shows products, and the options chooser is where the variant is picked.
- Text fields that hold several products as tags are not changed.
